Chapter 152: Space

Chapter Cast (at the end of the chapter)

I woke to an empty room and darkness. The candle was no longer burning in its holder, and it must have still been nighttime. I felt refreshed a moment before I remembered the night before. I worried immediately for Kinnon.

I used a cloth to wipe the dried sperm from my pubic hair, noticing the flask was no longer where I'd last seen it, then opened the door. It was windy but the rain had stopped, and quite foggy despite the whistling air. A quick glance overhead showed no stars. It still felt like it could pour down again at any moment. I didn't see a fire burning, either in the cook pit or in the outpost. The rain hadn't been away long, it still dripped from the leaves into fresh puddles in the sand.

I let my eyes adjust as best they could. There was no light of any kind, so it was a futile effort. I stepped back inside and checked the other shelters and the toilets. There was no sign of Kinnon.

I started to worry. Where might she have gone with the threat of the returning storm so clear?

I grabbed a flashlight and headed out. I looked around the edges of the camp and inside the storage rooms. I didn't see signs of her passing. Perhaps she'd decided to go for a walk in the darkness. So I hoped that's all it was.

I headed to the shoreline and I spotted a silhouette to the West a bit which seemed to be roughly Kinnon-size. I turned and approached. She was sitting on a blanket, nude, her legs crossed and tucked, her arms resting on her thighs, open, her eyes closed. It looked like she was meditating. The flask was there, as well.

I waited a few moments before I spoke, “Kinnon?”

She jumped and almost tore a hole in the blanket trying to stand. “Whaaa? Oh! Oh!”

“Easy!” I told her, “Just me. Just Kal.”

“Kal... hey. Sorry. I was deep into it...”

“Didn't mean to scare you.”

“It's okay,” she said, “I didn't hear you come up.”

“Fixin' to storm again,” I said. “You alright?”

“Yeah... I'm okay... I just needed a bit of time to myself.”

She sat back down and I said, “I'll leave you to it, then...”

“No, please. Sit with me,” Kinnon replied, waving her hand to her side.

I did so and stared out at the foggy blackness hovering over the churning blackness. There was nothing to see except the fog right before my eyes.

“Was a bit worried about you...”

“Thanks,” she said, taking my hand in hers. “I'm okay. Really. That was all just... really emotional, you know?”

“Want to talk about it?”

She shrugged, then said, “I didn't know what I'd feel, Kal. I mean... that's the first time since then that a man has touched me like that. I had to... you know... fight every second not to panic. It wasn't easy...”

“I'm so sorry...”

“No! Please, don't be sorry... This was good for me... That doesn't mean it was easy or... that I'm... past anything. I needed someone tonight, Kal. You were there for me. I needed those moments. Wanted them. I knew it would be difficult for me. I'm just glad it was you. You did everything right...”

“I hope so. It was... challenging at times for me as well, though,” I added quickly, “I'm not comparing—.”

She held up her other hand, “It's fine. I know what you mean. I know that wasn't like... the usual way you make love with a woman.”

“But it was an amazing experience... for me, at least...”

“Me as well... There were a few moments... last night... when I thought I'd lose it. That I'd scream and push you away. All those reaction... they're still there, just below the surface... I had to fight to keep them from winning. Kinda... kinda proud of myself, really.”

“I'm proud of you, too...”

She leaned over and kissed my cheek. “You're a great friend, Kal.” She grabbed the flask, eyed it a moment, then opened it and tipped a measure into her mouth. “I've got a long way to go,” Kinnon said somberly, “believe me, I know it. I'm still trying, Kal. I made it longer yesterday without a drink than any time in the last several years. I can do it again. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But I'll keep trying.”

“I'm proud of you,” I said again.

“Making love with you last night... I really did that, huh?”

“You did.”

She smiled and leaned against my shoulder. “I think I lost my gold star status.”

“Doubt anyone here cares.”

“Yeah. Silly labels. I'm still calling myself a lesbian... but... if you don't mind, maybe sometimes you can be my exception?”

“I'd like that,” I replied, kissing her head, “and whatever else I can be to support you.”

“Mmm...”

I felt drops of rain hitting my skin and we scrambled to race back inside before we were soaked. I relit the candle then we dried with a towel and I hesitated as she got into bed. Kinnon looked me. “I'll be okay now, Kal.”

It was her way of saying she wanted to be alone the rest of the night. I nodded and wished her sweet dreams, then went back to my shelter. The mattresses were completely full of sleeping women and children, so I returned to the common room and pulled down a mattress, then curled up, alone, to wait out the dawn.

- - -

Mie was still sick the next day, though no worse. Kinnon gave her something to help with the diarrhea but otherwise, she was to stay in bed and rest and drink lots of fluids.

The rain let up just after daybreak and it was a whirlwind of activity around camp after breakfast. There was a great deal of cleanup to do and only a few hands to do it. I wished we had Takino and Tok back with us to help out, but they were more valuable up North.

I hopped up onto the spot where the solar panels were laid out and found the problem immediately. One of the wires connecting them to the battery system had been hit by a branch and was splayed open. I had an inkling how to fix it, so after disconnecting the wire, I carefully trimmed it and reattached it to the connector. Plugging it back in, the unit below showed a connection was made and the battery was once more being recharged. It should have enough juice for the evening call with the Northerners.

The Uhonamonan's had missed our last weekly call, and I'd been trying to raise them each evening since then, at least when we had power to the unit. They didn't reply, and I found that a bit concerning. I was interested in how their meeting with Progress had gone and how things had progressed since then. Had they already started fighting? Had GS invaded? I had no way of knowing and a thousand variations of ill possibilities threatened to cloud my thoughts.

I couldn't worry about the other island. I had enough in Phoenix to deal with.

That included Nina.

She arrived in camp around lunch time. Her eyes were were fierce as storms, dark circles underneath, red spiderwebs filling the white edges. Her gait was determined and aggressive. She spoke to no one, heading directly into her shelter where she closed the door behind her.

I knew things hadn't gone well with Hakee. So did Kinnon, who caught my eye quickly, concern obvious on her face. She started to follow Nina and I stopped her. “Give her a bit,” I insisted.

When Nina didn't come out by the time we had finished our lunch break, I made my way to the shelter and rapped on the door. “Nina?”

“What?” came her grumbled response.

“Anything I can do?”

There was no answer, but a few seconds later the door opened slightly and I stepped inside. Nina collapsed back on the mattress, head in her hands.

I sat beside her and put my arm around her shoulders, but remained silent.

“Hakee's angry with me.”

“Give her time...” I offered.

“I know, Kal,” she said, defeated, “it just hurts... I hate that I hurt her...”

“Want to talk about it?”

Nina wiped her eyes. “She said we needed some space, so she was glad she was staying North a few more weeks. We both cried, but... I don't know what to do, Kal. I love her so much!”

“I know,” I said, trying to soothe her, “and I'm sure Hakee loves you, too. Give it some time right now. She'll come around and want to talk to you again. I promise.”

“I suppose,” Nina replied, quieting her sobbing. “I just don't know what to do about Kinnon. I mean... after the fight with Hakee... I can't exactly jump back into my new relationship and pretend things are alright...”

“Maybe some space there, too, is needed?”

“But that hurts, too!” she exclaimed. “I do love Kinnon. Maybe not as strong as what I feel for Hakee... we've only had a few days together... but... I do love her... How can I not want her to hold me right now?”

“I don't know,” I said quietly. “You'll need to talk to her at some point, but that can wait today. I'll speak with Kinnon if you like, explain that you need a little time to sort out your emotions.”

“That makes me sound weak...”

“No,” I disagreed, “it means you are strong enough to know when to take a breather and reconsider your situation. 'Only fools rush in' and all that...”

Nina let out her frustration, “Hmph... guess I was a fool for rushing it with Kinnon.”

“That's not what I meant.”

“I know,” she said, reaching up to touch my hand, “I know...”

“Look. Take some time. Get some rest if you need it. Give Hakee some time to process things. I'll talk to Kinnon, and when you're ready, you do the same. I promise, Sweetheart,” I said, kissing Nina's forehead, “it's going to be okay...”

“Thanks, Kal. I love you...”

“I love you always, Nina.”

She let out a long breath then sniffled a couple of times. “I'm not staying inside all day. Claustrophobic right now. Got anything I can do by myself?”

“Could use some eyes on the tree farm. Some of the fruits were looking like they might be approaching an early harvest.”

“I can do that. Thanks.”

Nina stood and shed her travel clothing. I could smell the travel and sweat on her body, more rich aromas from her privates. The scents in any other context would have been highly arousing. Instead, my heart hurt for Nina. And for Hakee and Kinnon. It was going to be a very difficult time for the three of them.

- - -

I found Kinnon checking on Mie. The thirteen-year old was doing better, her nausea and diarreah gone for the last twenty-four hours or so, but Kinnon advised her to rest another day or so. Kinnon's eyes showed her desire to talk, so I waited for her just outside the hut.

“I'm guessing things aren't great...” she said when she joined me.

“Not great.”

“Did they have a fight? Is Nina okay?”

“Nina's dealing with it all right now. She's hurt. She said Hakee's angry. Nina hates that she hurt her, and you, with all of this.”

“So,” Kinnon said, pulling her flask up before pausing and dropping her arm again without taking a drink, “does Nina want me to stop seeing her?”

“No... she didn't say so. I think, Kinnon, the best thing right now is just to take a breather. Everyone could use a little space to cool off and consider things. I know that won't be easy, for any of you,” I told her, “but it's the right thing to do. Give it a bit of time. I'm sure Nina will be ready to talk to you about it at some point today, but please, for right now, just let things simmer a bit.”

“Okay,” Kinnon said, sounding sad, “I can do that. It's probably better for everyone if I just end things, though...”

“No one suggested that,” I replied.

“I'm suggesting it. I never wanted to come between them, Kal. I feel simply awful.”

I took Kinnon's hand and massaged her fingers. “I know you do. Polyamory is a tricky beast. Just... give it some time, okay? Don't try to make any decisions today. Let Nina come to you to talk first, and even then, just let this ride until you can all make decisions without the anger and the hurt so fresh.”

“I can do that,” she repeated. “I'll try, at least.”

- - -

Nina and Kinnon did finally talk before supper. I wasn't there to hear it, but both women rejoined the rest of us around the cook fire looking resolute. Tears had been shed, I could see the redness in both sets of eyes. But whatever they'd decided, they wore masks of determination.

I'd had a chance to talk to Hakee on our call a few minutes earlier. We didn't discuss the romantic drama, it was all business. Progress was slow but significant on the new fields and Hakee sounded pleased with the efforts of all to date, even those who had initially seemed less-able to contribute. Her tone was even, no sign of the hurt which must be underneath, but it wasn't the manner or time for us to talk about her relationship with Nina.

I didn't get a chance to speak to Nina or Kinnon privately until after cleaning up the meal's remains. Ekoh and Kate were on watch that night, and I hung around the fire smoking a joint until Nina and Kinnon both made their way back and sat down.

“I want to go North, Kal,” Kinnon told me firmly.

“Don't you think that might be a bit of a slap to Hakee, you just showing up there all of a sudden?”

“I think it's the only thing that makes sense right now,” Kinnon assured me. “Neither of us want to risk doing more damage to things and if I stay here, Nina and I will face temptation we'll surely regret. Hakee deserves that not to happen. Instead,” she continued, “if I go North for a while, the temptation is gone, and maybe... maybe I'll have a chance to get to know Hakee... for her to get to know me...”

I thought on that a moment. “You support this, Nina?”

The woman nodded. “I don't want Kinnon to go... for selfish reasons, I know... but it makes sense. Whatever this becomes... Hakee deserves to know that I'm no longer doing something each night which hurts her.”

“Alright,” I agreed, “Kinnon goes North in the morning. But Kinnon,” I said, turning to the dark-skinned woman, “don't expect a party. Hakee is a strong friend and she loves fiercely. She's hurt right now, and I can tell you personally that she's stubborn and proud. It won't do to try to force things once you're there. Blend in. Befriend the others. Let Hakee have time to adjust. She won't like it at first, but maybe you are both on to something...”

They nodded but said nothing else.

“And ensure Manu returns when you get there. I don't want both our doctors away from the main camp. Mie's still recovering, and Amy isn't fully back yet, either. I'll want at least one of you here for emergencies, as well.”

“I'll tell her,” Kinnon replied.

After a moment of quiet reflection, I asked gently, “Taking your flask?”

Kinnon looked down at where it was grasped in her left hand. “Yeah...”

“You gotta be almost out of your personal stash... what are you going to do when it's dry?”

“I'll figure that out...”

Nina watched her lover's face with empathy.

“They don't keep much alcohol up there, and I can guarantee you Gale will notice if it is missing.”

“I won't steal it, Kal,” Kinnon said bitterly, then her tone softened. “I've got enough for a few days...”

“Consider smoking pot as a temporary fix. It's not going to keep away the cravings fully, but maybe if you substitute it often... you can extend your supply and find yourself needing less as time goes on...”

“I'll start on that now,” Kinnon said, tossing the flask onto the sand and reaching for the joint burning in my hand. She inhaled twice, then passed it to Nina, who did the same. Kinnon let out a sigh, then said, “Maybe not the same, but this isn't a bad way to get by, I guess...”

“We're here for you,” Nina told her gently, “Kal and I will do anything we can to help.”

“Just love me,” Kinnon replied, “and don't judge me when I fail...”

“Always,” Nina said in a bittersweet tone.

- - -

Kinnon was off after breakfast, carrying some of her medical gear along with a small bag which likely held both clothing and the last bottle of alcohol in her stash. Nina and I each gave her a quick kiss and then set about our work for the day.

I was concerned about the time lost to storms and made sure we fished and crabbed and collected clams, oysters, and scallops heavily. The shellfish were found in abundance down some distance to the West near an old shoal which made movement in that area treacherous to bare feet. Kate and Poln wore old pairs of water shoes to avoid nasty cuts. Bailey and I fished and crabbed all morning and into the afternoon, barely breaking to take lunch. Mie was doing better and though she couldn't bare the full-on heat that came on strong a few days before Summer solstice, she was able to take care of repairs inside the shelters along with Keekah and Amy.

Katie was restless, not wanting to stay inside and looking for Bailey or me whenever anyone turned a back on her. We spotted our daughter shuffling, and regularly falling down, to the East and so Bailey went to retrieve her. I set up a small shaded area near where we were fishing and brought out a few of the toddler toys which often kept her attention. That seemed to work, and so Katie alternated napping, nursing, and playing while we hauled in fat silverbacks and thick, succulent crabs.

Manu arrived a couple of hours before supper. She caught me up on the details from the North, echoing Hakee's sentiments from the night before, and letting me know that Gale was very happy that we had the extra hands. There was already a crew planting for Fall and Winter, and she expected we'd meet or exceed her harvest goals as long as the rain came regularly and we didn't suffer too much loss from winds, hail, bugs, or disease.

She told me that Takino had become fast friends with Popko and Hunamu, which I'd hoped for, of course, but also with Amu, the older man seemingly taking the younger man under his wing as if he was a son. Amu had always been the most reserved member of our community. He gave full effort in everything, but he liked his privacy, rarely taking part in our more raunchy social moments, preferring quiet times with Manu instead.

I asked her how Enumi's young daughter was taking to things. Aholinah, Holly as we were calling her, was a quiet and curious child, Manu assured me. She did help out the workers in the fields, often carrying messages or small items as needed, and she busied herself with picking stray weeds as if it was a fun game. The girl had also been receiving her first education classes and seemed eager to take it all in. I let Amy know so that she could update her schedule and expectations accordingly.

With Ekoh and Kate on watch again, and the others in with the children, Nina and I sat down by the surf on a blanket smoking joints. The evening breeze was light and cooler than it had been most of the day. Overhead, thin ribbons of clouds blocked only a small portion of the stars, and the moon was casting a great deal of light down on the water and sandy shore.

Nina leaned against me, quiet, and I held her in silence. I knew her mind was a mix of confusing and difficult thoughts, but I couldn't think of any more to say which might help.

“You know what I really want right now, Kal?” Nina said softly.

“What's that?”

“To forget about women for one night... I could use a pounding... Up for it?”

Her hand was already straying down onto my thigh. “Naturally,” I assured her.

“Good.”

Nina rolled onto her stomach between my legs and sucked my cock hard, deep-throating my length and lightly gagging each time it went just a bit too deep. I moaned and lay back, letting the beautiful woman swallow my dick. Before long, I motioned her to turn over me, and Nina brought her legs around to straddle my head. I ate her pussy, fragrant and rich, her full bush bristling with heady scents and tickling my chin.

Licking firmly along her slit, I brushed my tongue over Nina's anus then back down to her clit, running laps up one side and down the other, teasing her tight holes, swallowing whatever drooled from her vagina. She came after long moments of attention, my dick deep in her mouth, her moans vibrating through my body.

We flipped over and I ate her pussy from above, thrusting my hips down and back up as her lips provided suction. Soon, I turned again and in one smooth motion, I sank my penis into Nina's hairy cunt. She moaned and grasped my shoulders as we started rutting. Her eyes were closed, her mouth open and her lips wet from sucking me. The fiery flesh inside Nina's body consumed me, feeding my desire. I throbbed with pleasure as Nina came again.

I picked up speed, pulling back to just the tip before hammering back inside Nina's vagina. She wanted it hard in that moment, and I did my best to deliver. I held myself on the edge for long moments, wanting her to cum at least once more before I let go. Nina's fingers scratched lightly on my back, then more forcefully, her nails digging in, just stopping before she drew blood. I pounded her pussy, churning her wetness, her hole loosening and becoming sloppy.

“Fuck my ass...” she told me in a voice filled with desire. “I want you to cum in my ass...”

I pulled back and used my fingers to spread slickness onto Nina's butthole. I didn't open her gently with my digits as was my usual. Instead, Nina's hands were pulling me against her, and quickly, I sank deep into Nina's bowels, making her groan and grunt in discomfort. Her hands grabbed my buttocks and held me firmly inside her ass, then she started moving under me, and I began to really slam my length through her tight hole.

I shuddered and tried to hold back, but Nina's movements were making me fall over the edge. As I started to ejaculate deep in her butt, I moved a hand to her clit, and as I growled and emptied myself inside Nina's ass, she climaxed, forcing my cock to slip and fall onto her cunt, a long, thick rope of cum spurting out and over her hairy mound, another quickly splashing onto her stomach, more rushing out from her sore, gaping anus to drip onto the blanket.

Nina pulled me down on her, my cock throbbing small globs of cum against her skin, and we kissed, my weight fully on her, Nina's legs spread and wrapped around my mid-back. She shuddered a couple of times, breathing in loud gasps. Our lips parted, Nina sucked in her breath.

And then she started to cry.

It was not exactly the way I liked to end such a furious coupling, but I understood. Nina tried to fuck away her anguish, but instead, our copulation only intensified the hurt when it was done. I rolled off Nina and cradled her in my arms, draping a leg over her hips to wrap my body around hers, letting her sob against my chest.

It was going to be another difficult night.
